Training and Career

Dr Roberts trained as a doctor at The Royal London Hospital and St Bartholomews Hospital in Whitechapel, London also completing an intercalated degree in experimental pathology.

He then spent 18 months working in the East End of London before moving to Hampshire where he specialised as a psychiatrist gaining full membership of the Royal College Of Psychiatrists and accreditation with the GMC as a consultant specialist in adult and old age psychiatry.

During his training he gained a Diploma in Occupational Medicine reinforcing his views of the importance of a recovery focus. Dr Roberts chose to work predominantly with psychiatry of working age adults.

Whilst completing his training in Wessex Dr Roberts gained experience within adult psychiatry, old age psychiatry, learning disability and forensic psychiatry settings. Dr Roberts has a special interest in occupational psychiatry.

Dr Roberts works as an NHS Community Consultant Psychiatrist for Southern Health Foundation NHS Trust and is a Lead Tutor teaching Undergraduate Psychiaty for The University of Southampton.

Laura Pearse

Training and Career

Dr Laura Pearse trained in Medicine at Sheffield University having already completed a three year Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology at Southampton University.  The majority of her Psychiatric training was completed on the Cambridge rotation with the East of England Deanery, before moving to the Wessex Deanery.  During this time she gained experience in adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, rehabilitation psychiatry and Early Intervention in Psychosis.

Dr Pearse has full membership with the Royal College of Psychiatrists and registration on the GMC specialist register license to practice in Adult Psychiatry.  She has recently published her research on psychotic symptoms in Borderline Personality Disorder.

Dr Pearse has a special interest in Occupational Health Psychiatry

Dr Pearse has been teaching as part of the undergraduate teaching for medical students with Southampton University and now works as Community Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry and an Occupational Psychiatrist.

Training and Career

Dr Muzaffar completed her training with The Peninsula Deanery, Exeter, starting her journey as a junior doctor through to her higher specialist training in general adult psychiatry with a special interest in medical psychotherapy, worked in a tier 3 personality disorder service as well as early intervention in psychosis team.

She is a General Adult Psychiatrist and a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and is on the specialist register with the GMC as a General Adult Psychiatrist having gained her CCST in 2013.

She is experienced in using many modalities of psychotherapy, such as CAT, group analysis, psychodynamic psychotherapy and went on to train further in cognitive analytic therapy as she believes in taking a non-biological approach to patients’ difficulties.

She strongly believes in recovery oriented care for patients and was involved in setting up a peer support project on the inpatient unit in Exeter

She received her CCST with Royal College of Psychiatrist in 2013. She then moved to Hampshire after securing a substantive NHS consultant post and has since been working as a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist in the NHS since currently for Southern Health Foundation.

Senthil Subramanian

Dr Subramanian trained as a Doctor in Madras Medical College and completed his MD in Psychiatry in Stanley Medical College before Moving to the UK and working towards his Royal College of Psychiatrists Membership in London before gaining a NHS Consultant Post in Winchester OPMH. He provides support for local GPs and integrated care for their patients as well as teaching for trainees and medical Students of Southampton University.

Training and Career

Dr Philip Milln was trained at St Thomas’ Hospital, London under Dr John Pollitt and was a lecturer at St George’s Hospital under Professor Paykel.

He spent 2 1/2 years with the Medical Research Council studying mood disorders under Dr Alec Coppen. He started the mother and baby facility at Springfield Hospital in London and opened the behaviour therapy unit under Dr John Cobb.

Philip was appointed a consultant psychiatrist at the Department of Psychiatry in Southampton in 1983 and moved to the Priory Hospital in Marchwood in 1990. There he opened the eating disorders unit and the mother and baby unit continuing his work in General Adult Psychiatry as deputy medical director. He then moved as Medical Director to the Manor Clinic for 5 years until 2012.

He has retired from clinical practice and but continues his reporting.

He has been on the board of examiners at the Royal College of psychiatrists for 11 years and currently works for the General Medical Council (GMC), the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the General Dental Council(GDC) and others on fitness to practice issues.

Training and Career

Dr Ciaran Kelly completed general training in psychiatry at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital London.

He spent 2 years working in paediatrics, both community and specialist In-Patient Liaison.

Ciaran then did Higher Specialist Training in Child and adolescent Psychiatry at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Ciaran completed his final year of training working part time as a Research Fellow with The Royal College of Psychiatrists developing methods of promoting evidence based practice.

Ciaran was appointed a consultant psychiatrist in Community CAMHS Southampton in 1998, before being a Lead Clinician for Soutahmpton CAMHS. Ciaran helped develop an innovative multi-agency service for young people who had complex needs including mental health, who were out of education and had involvement with the youth offending team. This service was awarded a £2million/annum DoH grant and was one of three “Beacon Sites" nationally.

Ciaran moved to Southampton Priory in 2006. There he opened a new adolescent In-Patient Unit which has grown to 20 beds.

Ciaran moved to develop an independent Child and Adolescent Mental Health Consultancy service in Romsey since 2013. In conjuction with colleagues from a range of disciplines including Clinical Psychology, CBT therapists, Family Therapists, and Occupational Therapists Dr Kelly provides a collaborative, community and evidence based service for young people with a wide range of difficulties.
